The Biomass industry is highly exposed to fires and dust explosions. The root cause can often be related to the production machinery or the conveying systems, which in case of failure or breakdown can create ignition sources or hot surfaces that can easily ignite combustible dust dispersed in the air or accumulated on surfaces.

Traditional spark detection systems operate inside the process where it will detect and extinguish ignition sources or flames in milliseconds. But a spark detection system will not cover.

– To solve problems with fires occurring outside the process we developed a new fire protection concept – The Quick Suppression System – based on fast flame detectors and water mist. It is a system built on the same platform as our spark detection system. The presentation mixes theoretical training with examples and videos from live cases, says Jerry Elmberg.

Michael Finell is associate Professor at the Swedish university of agricultural sciences, SLU, in Umeå. He will speak about ”Innovative new raw material handling in the manufacture of wood pellets leads to controllable self-heating during storage”.

Based on the hypothesis that sawdust from pine trees with a small diameter contains a higher proportion of sapwood than sawdust from trees with a large diameter, 170 tonnes of pellets in 24 different batches were produced in an industrial scale trial. The production and the trials where made at Solör Bioenergi Pellet plant in Älvdalen in collaboration with SLU, Karlstad University and the Swedish Pellet Association.

Influence of sawdust origin and drying technology on pellet quality, off-gassing and self-heating properties were studied.

– The result shows, through separation and greater knowledge of the origin of the raw material, the risks of self-heating during pellet storage can be reduced, says Michael Finell.
